Changing Our World – one child at a time

mrmayers

Ever notice that some men find a woman who is VERY similar to their mother and some women find a man who is VERY similar to their father?  That’s not even the strangest part.  The strangest part is that we often do it even when we have a dysfunctional relationship with that parent!  What’s that all about?  You spend your teenage years trying your best to get out of their house, then you find a long-term partner who acts just like them!?!

But, it’s hard to avoid that behaviour unless someone takes the time to tell you about it beforehand.

What’s this got to do with education?

This website is about informing parents, teachers and carers of Black children about the best way to navigate the English school system beforehand.

So, are you sitting comfortably?

Then, let us begin…

Step 1: Save Yourself!

When you are on an aeroplane and they are giving you the safety instructions about what to do when the oxygen masks drop from above your head, what is the first thing they tell you to do?

Put your own mask on first.  Then put the mask on your child.

Why?  Because you need to be thinking clearly so that you can guide you and your child through a potentially serious sequence of upcoming events.  Similarly, if you want to make sure that your child is not traumatised by the experience of adolescence, you need to prepare yourself first so that you are fully equipped to prepare them.

Firstly, you need to get yourself a proper education.

Why?  Because the first step towards self-love is ‘knowing who you are’.  More specifically, knowing who you are as an individual and knowing who you are as a community – your cultural and historical knowledge.

So, as soon as you can, sign up to an African World Studies course with Robin Walker.

Why him?  Because he’s currently the best there is in the world right now!  It’s that simple!  Why be taught by anyone else if you can be taught by the best?  If you don’t know who he is, click here.  Alternatively, find him on Facebook here.

Next, sign yourself up to Tony Warner’s Black History Walks website here – scroll to the bottom of the page and it’s on the left.  Do not add that to your “to-do list”, just do it now.  That’s 20 seconds of your life – you can spare that!

Thirdly, buy the book Gifted At Primary, Failing By Secondary.  Yes, shock-horror, I am being completely honest.  I’m sure most websites will claim that their resources are better than everything else out there.  Here, we readily advertise the order of importance of activities to positively impact your child at school:

  1. enrol on Robin Walker’s African World Studies course "The Black Secret";

  2. sign up to receive the monthly newsletter from Black History Walks;

  3. buy "Gifted At Primary, Failing By Secondary" and the sequel "Sailing Through Secondary, Considering Uni."

Take care of that and we can move on to Step 2!
